Does History Repeat?

Looking back on the discrimination of African-Americans and women in the '50s and '60s, I ask myself if history really does repeat.

With their protesting, sit-ins, lobbying, etc., both African-Americans and women made progress to achieve more political rights and social equality. Does that mean that although gay marriage is an issue now and some believe that these marriages are not valid, later on, gay marriage will be allowed across the United States and it will become the accepted norm? Are these kinds of social changes inevitable? Does that mean I am backward for not fully supporting gay marriage? I'm quite sure that if I was brought up as a white female in the 1950s, I wouldn't have been comfortable with African-Americans at that time, but looking at the world today - being racist is highly frowned upon.

What does this mean for the future of what we now believe are "controversial" issues such as gay marriage? Do they all just eventually become accepted into society?

Just a thought.
